A return to basics: English
English is often a language that is taken for granted across many countries. For us, in particular, learning about it again can be quite a chore, but one can also help but think about the many times people have tried correcting us so silently over our personal errors and failure to utilise the language the way it should be utilised. Worse still, some of these mistakes can be actually ingrained into one’s memory, as is often the case when one says “case and point” instead of “case IN point.” Now, in everyday contexts, these can be very normal and these errors are quite forgettable, and even laughable when one checks out the internet for memes. However, in business, grammatical rules must be upheld to the highest standard, lest the employee risk failing to deliver the message in the most understandable possible manner. In fact, having absolute grammatical competency means no other than professionalism, as writing ungrammatically could mean you’re not taking the other person seriously. There is therefore a great importance in grammar both in terms of clarity and its various implications. We will therefore help participants by helping them regain their knowledge of the basics and hone them much further.
Setting the tone of writing proposals
The fundamental goal of a proposal is to persuade, and the first step to persuasion is to learn how each tone can influence the emotion of whoever is lucky enough to read a well-made proposal. With this in mind, there are three things to remember: the active and the passive voice, which ones should be used in very precise intervals, and which of these should be given more importance in writing, and lastly the force of words. Why be “awesome” when you can be “magnificent?” Why “destroy” when you can “annihilate?” Granted, these are rather extreme examples, but the effect of the words are there; the latter always give you a sense of grandeur, while the former can seem quite stale. However, there should also be a balance to it: remember that your only goal is not only to impress, but to provide perfectly succinct information. The goal, therefore, is to be able to dictate the tone despite writing less; this is the ultimate form of said art, when everything is stated perfectly and concisely.
When one writes, one has to have facts to support their claims. This is even truer when making a writing proposal, as the ultimate goal is to persuade customers and colleagues to buy into your ideas or products. Now, rhetorical ability and high vocabulary are indeed very useful to draw in readers, but as implied before, too much of it can be quite detrimental to the writer as it can elicit criticism. However, this is where truth comes in. After all, there is no substitute for truth when it comes to convincing people to do what you want. We will take this skill even further by teaching participants how to organise their written work and lay down every argument and evidence available in the most convincing and digestible manner.
Cultural sensitivity is a symptom of virtue and love of diversity, and it is always manifested in the way one writes. By simply knowing the most appropriate words to use in interacting with other cultures, participants can literally earn the trust of foreign clients and even their permanent interest and loyalty. This, after all, is also the hallmark of the artist: capable of pleasing all they encounter; in our participants’ case, by writing with a heart.
Jargon across and within industries
