Discussing Basic English
A lot of profesionals take for granted the fact that their first and home language is English, so much so that you probably haven’t noticed there’s a speliing error. Okay, there are actually two. If you spotted both of them, then that means two things: you’re adept at spelling and you deserve extra points. However, that doesn’t mean your teams possess the same ability. Further still, spelling is but one aspect of the English language. As such, for this training course, we will tackle matters such as punctuation, basic grammatical rules and proper sentence structure. This will allow participants to keep their linguistic muscles healthy and prepare them for more advanced business writing.
Write to express, not impress
A common problem of any budding business writer is the temptation of flaunting one’s superior vocabulary by writing an egregiously long paper. Unfortunately, being parts of a fast-paced environment with strict quotas and time constraints, bosses and colleagues can ill-afford reading a 30-page document regarding the company’s next meeting on Monday (although that would be admittedly, but rather inappropriately impressive). As such, written works must be short and concise. Therefore, it is very important for us to help participants learn how to write concisely and avoid the temptation of being too showy with one’s craft. In fact, participants may think of it as a challenge in itself: “How do I appeal to people with just 300 words?” We show participants how.
Write according to business standards
Just as universities have academic writing, so to do businesses have business writing, and just as universities write for knowledge, businesses write for efficiency and fast-paced work. Here, our goal is to help professionals create professional emails, memos and letters by showing them proper formats and help them acclimate to these formats through constant writing exercises. Of course, there’ll be room for goofing around: they can invent addresses and even use whatever names they desire. They’ll also get to read these letters around for maximum laughs. Here, our ultimate goal is to show participants that proper writing can be done in groups and in a very interactive manner. By the end of this session, they’ll easily be able to beat anyone’s APM with their writing speed and still maintain the quality standards that companies pride themselves for.
Know the “force” behind words
Some words are often more appropriate than others. The joys of writing are often made clear with the use of powerful words; words that have sent us to planets; words such as “glorious,” “luxurious.” Okay, we are rather unsure how the latter has been used in relation to space travel, and we’ve rather had enough of rhymes here ourselves, but we are serious: some words are more appropriate and effective than others. However, this can widely vary according to the context. Accomplished business writers need to learn which words are more appropriate and how to sense the opportunity to use striking words. Often, word choice can determine how well an advertisement can work and so much more. By the end of this training session, participants will have an instinct for proper and appropriate words.
Develop their own writing styles
In order to help participants become more effective business writers, they need to have the opportunity to create their very own writing style. This means having their own “Instinct for words,” signature phrases, sentences and even their own scripts if they want to draw up plans on how to converse properly within the workplace.
