Workplace Negativity Training
Emotions are part of what make us human and as a result are always present in whatever environment we find ourselves in and influence our interactions. Certain emotions such as happiness and anger for example can give people the energy they need to perform certain tasks from hard labor to more thinking tasks, while sadness and depression can take away energy and therefore reduce one’s capacity to perform any form of work. Positive and negative emotions can be generated by one’s self and the environment one finds themselves in, and as already stated, can influence performance greatly.
This is the challenge of the workplace. While not usually designed to be oppressive and soul-crushing is, in its own way a hotbox of negativity and home to many things that can lower morale and worsen a person’s emotional and mental condition even further. Workplace stress, difficult and/or uncooperative coworkers and superiors, toxic environment, and offensive clients. All these and more are present in the environment and can really weigh down even the most upbeat employees in a workplace and stifle their performance. To say nothing of the effects it can have on their mental health; ranging from worrying such as anxiety, to life-threatening such as depression and suicide.
While the it is easy to put the blame of all of this squarely on the workplace, the environment, and even the peers present in the same space, the workplace plays a role that is simply too important to simply be rid of, especially in the modern world. While paid vacations and other perks help relieve workplace stress, it’s more akin to bandaging a gaping wound. No, any solution that can or should be implemented must work in the long term and generally assist workers coping with and adapting to the nature of the workplace. Paramount Training and Development has spent a fair amount of time attempting to create such a solution, and with the creation of our Workplace Negativity Training Program comes the realisation of that solution.
It is clear to all that the workplace despite its many pitfalls and its sometimes callous disregard for the individual and their health, is a cornerstone of the modern world and where a lot of the things we need to function in it are made, produced, or distributed. As with operating any machine though, certain measures need to be made in order for both those using it and the machine itself to perform at their best. This does mean that certain individuals with the right skills and know-how to see where negativity can be found and mitigated, and how to handle anyone unfortunate enough to be down before they hurt themselves, all the while also promoting the kind of behaviors and attitudes that make the workplace as less negative place to be in. Those lessons and more are offered by Workplace Negativity Training, and we here at Paramount Training and Development are here to teach them to you.
Identify sources of workplace negativity
The workplace is composed of many components, from location, to objects found within, to the people, clients, and a whole smorgasbord of entities present within them. All of these things can be seen as projecting a certain aura around them that influences the mood of coworkers, or at the very least are usually associated with some or other value that makes interacting with them a point of personal and emotional contention. People in particular can run the gamut from sources of strong positive reinforcement to soul-crushing and oppressive individuals that by means of power dynamics or poor wording of statements made to others, can just drag themselves and their peers down. To start Workplace Negativity Trainees off, they’re set to learn how certain social interactions within the workplace can cause stress, how improper handling can negatively affect one’s mood, and how certain objects can be negatively linked to bad interactions had in their presence.
Work around emotional hazards within the environment
Workspaces are usually made into confined boxes found within drab places in the middle of concrete jungles. Getting to these places as well is a challenge, and in particularly congested environments such as large cities found in the middle of population centres it can cause stress and negatively affect an employee’s emotions long before they even start working. Psychology plays a lot into Workplace Negativity Training, and with that in mind it takes into account how the environment where the workplace itself is situated in can negatively affect a person’s mental and emotional health. There are ways and strategies to help mitigate these adverse effects and they range from the micro-perspective (which is to say, the workers themselves) just as well as the macro perspective (changing elements of the environment to improve people’s mood), all of which will be learned and can hence be implemented by our peers.
Be capable of working with difficult people
One of the greater challenges that learners of Workplace Negativity Training must face are what are termed as difficult people. These individuals vary wildly, from the uninitiated and ill-informed though non-malevolent, to those who are intentionally violating the socially acceptable for whatever malevolent purpose they may have. There are many ways to deal with these problem individuals as will be taught to our learners, but equally important is the ability of our learners to identify the intent of these violators; for while there may be methods to deal with these troublemakers in a neutral manner, other methods require much more severe measures that should only be carried out if dully warranted. Learners hence are also given methods and strategies to reliably identify the intent of these individuals and then deal with them in the most appropriate manner possible.
Identify individuals suffering from office negativity
Workplace negativity can affect different people in wildly different ways. Some are very pronounced such as displaying sharp dips in overall productivity or heightened hostility and agitation when interacting with others, while others are less obvious such as occasional outbursts, propensity for self-deprecation, and so on. The intensity of how they manifest their emotional trouble matters little however, as both can be terribly suffering from similar cases of mental and emotional degradation; at best it means their performance takes a hit, at worst they’re at risk of bringing harm to themselves and the workplace at large. Workplace Negativity Training not only sees these people as sources of negativity but also as people at risk. Hence why learners are taught how to spot them through whatever manifestations they display, reach out to them using methods employed by experts in the field of psychology, and how to set them off on the proper course of treatment.
Promote healthy practices for mental health
Meditation is used traditionally by monastic monks as part of their daily routines and rituals, but studies have shown that the act of meditation has many useful applications and can be used to promote a healthier mind. Proper rest, relaxation, and decompression are also extremely beneficial to the human brain as it allows the brain to recover, repair, and otherwise mend itself after strenuous, daily exertion. This act can also encourage improvements at home or at work such as better retention and more automated connections. As most people may undervalue, disregard, or otherwise, underestimate the value that these simple acts can be for their overall mental health, learners taking this course will be properly informed of the many benefits of proper mental health as well as strategies and methodologies that can assist them in their own personal mental health and how these simple acts can improve their overall mental health and hence their performance on the field.
