Interpersonal Social interaction is a key component in everyday life. It can take the form of the written, spoken, or motioned word depending on who you’re talking to at the time.

The interaction of listening is arguably the more important part of the exchange. Listening is where sound is received and reinterpreted into something that can be understood by the listener and hence be responded to be it by word or action. The act of listening however is not an easy process as it takes into consideration a plethora of factors which can easily alter, distort, or otherwise change the meaning of a statement, causing easy misinterpretation and hence dissonance.

Listening is a skill that can take a lifetime to master, but as a skill it can be taught and learned. Most people learned how to listen as soon as they started understanding the many strange sounds and noises that their parents were making. It’s a lifetime process that can take just as long to master. It is a key component in communication especially those done so through audio, and audio-visual media. It has many facets and intricacies that need to at least be familiarised in order for one to display any form of competency. It is a skill, plain and simple. And as a skill, it can be studied, learned, mastered, maybe even perfected. As it serves a major role in both everyday life and business, Paramount Training developed this Listening Skills Training course for learners who are perhaps challenged or lack confidence in their abilities in this field to further themselves as listeners and thus become more potent components in their business, or at the very least improve their listening abilities in the field.

Recognize the Role of Listening

As was stated earlier, listening is half of a conversation and since it is the part where the listener not only receives but interprets the stimuli they received in order to formulate an appropriate response be it by word or action, it’s therefore necessary that the module explains or otherwise illustrates exactly how vital this act is and its immense roll in conversation by means of tried and tested methods as well as experimental techniques and strategies developed for this precise role by experts in the field.

Develop Listening Competencies

As with most skills there are many components in listening that learners need to be effective when performing the act of listening. These can be as simple as basic phonetic interpretation and lexical recognition, to advanced factors encountered when faced with diverse populations such as distinct regional or national accents, context-sensitive information, cultural backgrounds and/or references, and a myriad of other factors that listeners and by the end of the course, our learners, must be aware of and adapt to or otherwise work around from without sacrificing as little of the speakers’ intelligibility as possible. We show participants how to simply develop these listening skills.

Identify and appropriately respond to auditory cues

Part of the struggle with listening are the many subtle auditory cues that can shift the balance and hence the meaning of certain statements depending on their use within the context of a conversation or other forms of listening activity such as inflection, turns of phrase, volume, and so on. As these factors can, as previously stated, drastically alter the meaning of a statement listeners and learners in the course will be made aware of how these can affect conversation and how to appropriately respond to these alterations, as well as adapt their responses to it at that moment.

Understand the role of body language in the act of listening

In direct interpersonal conversations or at least in conversations facilitated in a media with an audio-visual component, a competent listener will not only take into account what the speaker is saying, and the manner in which they make their speech and apply stress and volume and so on, but also the subtlety of human movement including anything as obfuscated as eye contact, to motions of the face and head, up to and including the motions created by the speaker’s body. When applicable, listeners and this training course’s learners will be taught to identify these subtle motions and movements and incorporate these in their interpretations of their speakers’ intended meaning, with the goal of constructing a more accurate and complete interpretation using both this and the spoken word.

Demonstrate and Develop techniques for listening to challenging speakers

Unfortunately there will always be speakers who, by no fault of their own, are extremely difficult to listen to. Be it due to some physical limitations, preexisting impediments, inexperience, language barriers and accents, or a combination of any of these as well as a myriad of other issues that may be present in their speech. As our learners are expected to face the challenge of listening to and interpreting diverse populations on a regular basis, the training program will help them with the skills and competencies required to work with these populations and properly adjust to their needs with the help of experts in training.

Develop a streamlined system to improve their skills

While the active process of listening is a constant and near-endless battle of interpreting cues and voices, most of the time speech is used for the transmission of relevant information onto a waiting listener. One skill that learners will be able to develop is how to focus on and quickly interpret these important pieces of information in said speech, so regardless of how garbled, grammatically challenged, or otherwise obfuscated the statement may appear to be, the point of the challenged speaker is still successfully transmitted and interpreted in an orderly fashion.
