About Journalism Training Sessions
Things can happen. Lots of things can happen. Most of these things are insignificant and not worth much thought on their own. However there are some occurrences that are unique enough to be worth drawing more attention to. Maybe lives were lost or saved, perhaps what happened here can cause tangible repercussions to the local community, the country, or even across the world, maybe something was lost or found, or maybe something was unique enough to be brought to a wider audience’s attention just because of how unique it was.
This is where journalists step in. The basic role of the journalist is threefold; to show you the event itself, the hows and whys the event occurred, and the impact this event will have for people affected by it. The journalist will use any means necessary to get their message across and has become the pioneer of media usage; be it by sound, by print, by televised broadcast, or all of the above transmitted through the internet.
This complicated and sometimes dangerous profession is always present and always in demand. To that end, Paramount Training and Development has created a Journalism Training module for people interested in learning the many things needed to perform their task as a part of the media.
As long as events continue to unfold in any part of the globe, the journalist will always appear, as needed, to report on it. In an age where information is everywhere and at its highest demand, the journalist and their profession will not be going away any time soon. However in this current age where information is everywhere, disinformation is also equally abundant. The current climate also presents a challenge for most journalists as their very institutions are being questioned and challenged as more and more examples of their negligence and lack of ethics become more and more present in the minds of the public. However, the truth and the facts will never go away, and as long as there are individuals brave enough to bare it, the journalist will still exist in whatever form they may take.
Promote media literacy
Journalism has its own unique languages. Journalism of the written word is different from that seen on television. And also quite different from the language you see on the scripts of radiomen in the airwaves. All three have been tailored to meet the demands of each medium they belong in and are hence nearly unusable when used in a different media format. To this end, this course will teach learners how to write for print, for radio, and for televised news, and how to do so in an effective fashion.
Teach learners in the use of multiple media systems
With the creation of personal computers and later the internet, the average journalists’ arsenal has grown more powerful than ever. One can use older though still reliable mediums such as the print and radio, or opt for the use of more advanced mixed media methods such as television, furthermore all of these and more can reach the vastest audiences in the world thanks to the internet. While learners may pick and choose their own medium to specialise in, the opportunity to become proficient with all forms of media will be made available to them. This covers basic application, appropriate media usage, to application of these media for use in the field, as well as which media is best suited for what kind of coverage.
Teach learners of the expanded role of journalists
Journalists are not limited to merely relaying the news, unfiltered, to the general public. Editorials, Op-Eds, and Opinion pieces are also at the more senior journalist’s arsenal when they wish to not only inform their audience of the facts, but also present their opinions and additional material that can help others formulate their own conclusions on events at large in the long run. As such, the program will teach learners how to create such pieces, and when these are most applicable or appropriate for which situations.
Train learners in information gathering
One of the key components in journalism is information. Without information, the journalist has nothing to convey to their wider audience. Information is everywhere and can be extrapolated by even just the five senses. However a lot of information that journalists need in order to perform their profession can be faked, forged, or otherwise counterfeited by unscrupulous individuals with less than noble intentions. For this reason then, our course offers learners tools and techniques to identify and verify reliable sources of information for use in their work, while also teaching learners to identify and avoid unreliable or inconsistent sources which may end up misdirecting them and hence their audiences.
Promote Ethical, Unbiased Journalism
The role of media in the modern world is immense. Everyone from the layman to the statesman use the news to make informed decisions in their daily lives. Which can be anything from choosing to drive down a different road to avoid traffic, to declaring war on a neighboring country thanks to the information the journalist has given them.
Because of this, some have taken to the media and brought their biases with them, sacrificing ethics for either number of views or to promote their own points of view to a large audience and swing them in their favor; a fair use of media but not when done so under the guise of pure facts and information, up to and including complete fabrications to press a narrative. This goes against the code of ethics that all journalists have sworn or affirmed to as part of their profession, and as such this training module will teach learners the value of ethics in journalism, as well as how to write and speak in an acceptably unbiased matter when faced with sensitive issues.
