Handling Office Politics Training
This training session is handled in-house and can be customised to suit your objectives and needs. Australia wide including Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, Parramatta.
Office politics is something that many business places may have to deal with these days. Some people would deny that it exists in an office, but it is inevitable for office politics to exist. There can be good politics and bad politics, but the point is that it is there, and people in the office either navigate it, or end up its victim. Effective handling of office politics ends up in a number of ways: in your favour, in someone else’s, or victimising someone in the office. This training course is therefore set to help your team members effectively handle office politics and not become its victim.
Office politics is built on the hierarchical structure of any and every office or business. It’s unavoidable, and so the only thing a good worker can do against it and its negative effects is to discourage it, and beat it at its own game by playing it better. These methods will train workers to keep a positive attitude, do positive things in the office for everyone, and filter their words to others carefully. This training course is essential in teaching workers how to succeed from the bottom of a workplace, how to interact with other teammates, and how to build mutual trust and respect inside an office. This pairs well with other sessions about leadership, teamwork, and social office environments. If you wish to know about our other training courses and services, please contact us. We’re helping teams and companies become their very best today, and your team could be next.
It’s very hard to hate someone in the office who is smiling and laughing all the time. If you bring good cheer, healthy jokes, and act supportively in the workplace, attacking you through rumours and gossip instantly becomes that much harder without invoking the frowns of the other workers who like how you are. Negative politics are not as likely to victimise someone who is positive, and displays positive politics. While we’re talking about politics, we need to differentiate between positive and negative politics. Negative politicking is done through gossiping, rumours, and tearing down others in the office while using other workmates for personal gain at their expense. Positive politicking is done through supporting others in their tasks, building a comfortable atmosphere for everyone in the office, and having the professional integrity to play for the objectives of the office. We teach participants how to remain positive with some easy skills and tools.
Watch What You Say
Rumour and gossip is the negative office politicians’ primary weapon of choice. The convenient thing about their weapon that you can turn against them is that it requires fuel, and that fuel is information that can hurt a person’s reputation at work. “Having dirt on someone” is how a negative office politician leverages influence and favours, and that can be stopped by cutting off their source of fuel. Disclose any personal information about yourself carefully, and with the assumption that it will be disclosed, no matter how much you trust the workmate you want to tell. A promise to be confidential about it is just a bunch of words they say to make you tell them important information they can hurt you with. Another way to cut their fuel line is to never passively engage in gossip or rumours as well. If anyone shares it to you, consider first how credible the claim is, but never, ever spread it until you are absolutely certain that it is true, and that you should share it, because it won’t hurt anyone in the company. Let’s also get into how you should talk in the workplace: talk positively, and support company objectives, but never do so aggressively. Never whine and complain about the company, but do be confident in your skills to carry out their demands. If you ever have to voice out an objection or criticism, make sure you take an organisational or company perspective, not a personal one, so they cannot say you are biased or selfish. We give more examples and tools to help communication.
Never Play Negatively
We provide participants with a range of techniques and examples for what to do with Negative play. The game for office thrones, as discussed above, can be played with negative or positive politics. Too many good workers get torn down or fired by negative office politicians because they didn’t want to get involved in office politics. You might not be the biggest power in the office, but you can still hold considerable influence while you’re lower in the company ladder. The key to this is to play the politics game anyway, but play a totally different game from those negative politicians. Play the game positively, while negating anything they throw at you. Play positively, even with those negative politicians, and get to know them, understand their motives and goals. When you know this, you can strategically plan for how they might attack you, and devise the appropriate counter-measures. Be courteous and pleasant to them, but always be extremely careful what information you release to them; the last thing you want is for them to fuel gossip about you with information from your own mouth. Another way to play positively is to understand the office’s political environment. Which administrators are helpful and positive? Which of them have authority, but won’t use it? Who among your workmates is fond of using people for their own ends? Who are the office heroes and champions? Is this a mostly negative or positive political environment? Identify your enemies and allies in the workplace, and build relationships with all of them, but never take sides if you can help it. Taking sides against certain workmates creates antagonising, and can only aggravate foul play. Support other people in their tasks, and be as helpful as possible, and honestly so. Let no one in the office ever say you didn’t do your best. Always give your best, to everyone, and no one can ever say a bad word about you without losing credibility and political influence in the office. If you play your office game positively, you’re playing defensively instead of offensively, and failed attacks on you will be extremely costly. If your defences fail, and you’re fired, then good words from the administration who no doubt found you a great asset anyway will boost you up in your next job. In short, if you play like you want everyone to win, everyone can win, including you, but if you play to make others lose, you are doomed to lose eventually. More sample content within the workbook.
