About Delivering Constructive Criticism Training Sessions
Criticism generally gets a bad reputation since many people feel poorly after it, especially in the workplace, where criticism is always present after any product is presented. However, it doesn’t have to be that way; criticism is necessary to building up expectations of results, and providing knowledge needed to make such expectations a reality. It is meant to help mend mistakes by providing solutions to poor decisions. However, there is a culture built up that criticism is always negative, and that we should feel bad for receiving it. This is not true; this only appears to be the case because the majority of criticism we deliver, while meant to be helpful, comes out wrongly, or comes out offensively. Put Them In a Sandwich
A common and popular method for delivering constructive criticism is the Feedback Sandwich method. Tried and true, the principle behind the method is simple; give positive comments, then your request for improvement in a certain area, then positive comments again. It works on all levels, for both employer and employee interactions and criticisms. To get deeper into our understanding of this method, let’s specify the parameters of what you have to say. First, praise them on something they handled right in the situation. Find something nice to say before you say anything else to them.
Examples such as the following are provided and discussed throughout the session:
“I liked how you were very straightforward with your opinion about Anne’s performance.” This is a positive remark that starts you off on the right foot with the person you mean to criticise. This also gives you the rapport you need to deliver the illustrative meat of your sandwich; your criticism. Make sure that you deliver it politely, and as kindly as possible. “However, I suggest that you take more care which words you choose to say in such opinions, in case you come off as unprofessional, or worse, you hurt Anne’s feelings.”
This can be particularly difficult to deliver, but this is what you have to say. Then, when all of that’s been done, the last part of your sandwich is the positive finish. Paraphrase the first positive comments you gave, and then give positive results as incentive, should the person you are criticising follow your words. “Again, I loved your honesty, but if you’re kinder with your word choice, Anne will be more likely to do what you say, and she’ll want to listen to you more.” This method is particularly strong for helping workmates you haven’t established strong rapport with, or those whom you don’t communicate with regularly.
Focus on the Situation
Whenever you deliver criticism, the main selling point of most critiques is almost always that it is delivered kindly. To do this, you simply have to divert your focus from the person, to the situation you wish to critique. It is strongly advised to avoid attacking the person as if he or she is wrong, but do show how the situation that person is in is wrong in certain regards. Further, politeness goes a long way in such situations where you must critique someone. For example, if you find someone’s behaviour displeasing, you might say, “You’re so pessimistic. It’s such a downer to be around you.” This is delivered terribly; it is a personal attack on the person, not his or her actions, and it doesn’t offer anything constructive for the person to work with, so they can change their behaviour. A better thing to say would be, “I felt hurt by your comments sometimes. There was a time I wore a certain dress, and you commented that it was an ugly dress. It took me by surprise and I was sad that day. Could I ask you to please be kinder about your comments on me?” This example pulls focus onto how you feel about it, without losing too much focus on the behaviour you are critiquing, and the last sentence is a constructive suggestion as to how the person in question could improve his or her behaviour.
Be Specific, but Kind
Don’t be vague about what you’re critiquing or what you want. If you want to get your critique or point across, you must be honest about it, and that means specifically pointing out what you want them to do, with consideration to the other lessons above. Failure to be specific will result in a failure in communication, and the person you are critiquing won’t quite understand your feedback, and hence, won’t be able to fulfill your expectations. That would be your fault as the giver of critique, so specifying your expectations is always a good habit to practice in critique. It also shows that you really understand what you are critiquing, so it aids in having your workmates trust your critiquing opinions. Remember, it always pays to be honest in your critiques, but never forget to be kind.
