Body Language Literacy
One of the key components of active listening is that of reading body language. Here, a professional is able to see signs beyond that of words. How do you know if a customer is unhappy, or doesn’t like your product, or your selling approach? Every gesture, every action, every little detail that they are able to spot will allow us the crucial ability of knowing where a conversation is headed before it even gets halfway and being three steps ahead. The latter, in particular, is extremely important, as it will ultimately lead to you developing techniques that will help you establish ultimate control over the conversation. In fact, it’s not just that: body language reading is in itself key to establishing rapport; it shows that you are sensitive to the customer’s needs and are willing to adjust to their concerns. This is the value of body language in a nutshell, and the benefits can only continue from here.
As stated before, there’s more to listening than just the words. However, there’s also more to it than just body language, too. It takes a great deal of sensitivity to recognise the proper way of providing feedback to colleagues, which is to say by knowing their emotional depth. When doing any work at all, colleagues often tend to hide their true emotions as they try to produce work, but these emotions can often impede with the quality of the work, and they have to be put forward to allow them to reach maximum potential; this is the essence of constructive feedback. First, it acknowledges the person for who they are and the investment that they took. Second, it corrects them by helping them understand their mistakes and even lays down suggestions for their improvement. As implied, therefore, active listening isn’t just about listening either– it’s also about sensitive communication.
Our conversational partners often tend to predict questions as the conversation drags on as thoughts are filtered by the spoken word or even misstated. This brings us to another component of active listening: proper questioning. The goal of questioning in this context is not just to gain as much information as possible, but also acknowledging these feelings of “void” or “space” that customers and colleagues sometimes forget to bring up. Here, a mere clarification can go a long way: “Am I correct in saying this, or that?” or “Your point was this and that, correct?” By being able to properly question and confirm the thoughts of others, not only will information be verified, but further insight will be brought to the table. Critical Thinking Skills
Conversations are generally how we interact with each other. By asking questions, answering questions and exploring different perspectives, further insight can be gained. But there is more at work than just communication. Active listening and critical thinking of what is being discussed is happening in the background. Just like any skill, critical thinking can be honed and sharpened. In other words, critical thinking skills, while exercised often, require honing to assert control, create proper conversational goals and prevent listlessness.
